The house, designed as a sequence of courtyards, is configured around a line of five Neem trees existing on the site. Modulation of daylight has been key to the design process, taking advantage of the Neem trees.
First came the trees. With that the massing, orientation, and then everything else followed. Both work symbiotically without one taking precedence over the other. There is a seamless flow of exterior to interior spaces. The existing trees have been used to layer the built form and order the transition.
Exposures, partially shaded or not, by the foliage, are controlled by series of timber fins and louvers of varying sizes, spacing and proportions. The timber fins and louvers serve the dual function of articulating the built form as well as controlling the thermal gain and ordering daylight. The glazing has been planned to give controlled, external views with dappled daylight streaming within. The design space has been choreographed to create a distinct sequence of layered spaces within and around the tree courtyards in order to house the art collection.
